Sexuality Boutique Review: Babeland (Seattle)

707 E Pike St
Seattle, WA 98122

Babeland is the best chain of sexuality boutiques that I’m aware of, and this branch is no exception.  We visited with a couple-friend of ours, and for one of the us it was the first time to a Babeland!  As usual, there was a delightful array of lubes, toys and videos as well as a back wall of luscious leather goods for the kinksters among us.  If you’re seeking a strap-on harness I strongly suggest that you look here, as they feature a wide range and you can try them on (over your jeans) to see which one calls your name (or your partners’).  Basic leather (floggers, cuffs and crops) is well presented, but bondage and S&M enthusiasts might also want to pay a visit to Wild at Heart, as they have more artist leather by local crafts people.  Babeland does carry some Aslan Leather, which is a personal favorite made in Toronto.

More after the jump!
The staff, true to Babeland form, is approachable, friendly and very, very well trained.  A notable thing about Babeland stores, and a few other sex boutiques scattered around the country, is that they have a sample of all of their toys and lubes out for you to turn on and pick up.  Nothing is locked in clamshell packaging (although the one you buy is clean and new, of course) where you can’t quite tell if it is what you want.  The feel of a toy or lube is essential to whether or not you’ll want to make friends with it, of course, so this is an important aspect of this store.  Oh yes, they also have lots of condoms, with softly inflated sample of each available for your amusement and information.  We purchased a studious sort of book, a cute little couple’s massage book, a toy, and a very reasonable set of batteries for the toy.  We were thrilled to see that the batteries (Babeland brand, no less) were not overpriced.  I’m also amazed by how many Babeland brand products there are, from basic vibes to (at least) 2 qualities of lubes, to batteries and more!

The friend who had never been to a sex boutique before said that he felt comfortable, although it was a little weird.  I’m assuming that the weird part was being in a sex shop, perhaps a sex positive one.  He also noted that he was “weirded out” by the leather goods in the back.  Definitely pick Babeland over Wild At Heart (also reviewed), if that is the case for you or your loved one.  He noted that it was very female-centric, and did not see many men’s toys there.  I’m assuming he was looking for front-side toys, since there are quite a few anal treats here for everyone including many specifically for men.  However, his point is well made!  There were a few sleeves, but a special little section for the gents might be nice.  Hey, if The Body Shop can help the guys with their own section, why not Babeland?  The other three of us were pleased, highlighting the lube selection and nice variety of moderate through premium toys.

Ok, the wine is prolonging my review.  Babeland rocks, prices are good, and the staff is great.  Also, the community board is a great place to connect to the queer women’s community and find out about erotic events in the area.
